Democracy, Regime Stability, and Growth

چکیده
This paper deals with the relation between a county’s type of polity, its duration, and its growth rate. Results indicate that, over time, as regimes grow older, long-standing democratic regimes are relatively more successful than autocracies with the same history of duration. The relation found does not seem to be driven by older, wellestablished democracies nor by any particular income group. Hence, even though there are initial costs associated with young democracies, over time democracies tend to outperform other types of polity.

Growth stability is an important objective—because development requires sustained increases in income, because volatility is costly for the poor, and because volatility deters growth.
